Mason Sand
Also known as pool sand, will create a very smooth bottom layer and is the most popular choice. The sand is thoroughly watered down then tamped to compact the sand, finally it is smoothed out. Mason Sand is the most economical . When your pool is completely filled with water, this base material will be just as hard as most in ground pool bottoms. The tamping by installation crews, along with many tons of water will compact the sand into this smooth but hard layer.
Mortar sand is used to form the bottom and sides of the pool base under the liner, this sand is very malleable and similar to what is used in stress balls. It is normal for the pool bottom to be more or less smooth, with some slight indentations created from the liner installation process. The pool floor will always be in a constant state of transition when in use.
Portland and Vermiculite Mixture. This base provides a smooth soft surface. Vermiculite is a lightweight mineral. Mixed with cement, it forms a semi-hard surface that feels slightly spongy underfoot. It is porous, so it won’t trap water between the floor and liner. This materials best claim is that it’s easier on the liner. A vermiculite base is smoother on the liner for when the vinyl expands and contracts with the temperature.
Armor Guards/Liner Shields is recommended for areas with crabgrass or any grassy location when selecting a mortar sand base. These are the most common underlayment options. Armor guard is a prefect geo engineered fabric that is extremely strong. This options provides an added protection from rocks or sharp pebbles. They also add a layer of cushioning that for your feet as you walk in the pool. The armor guard is installed over the mortar sand base and under the pool vinyl liner.
